The Cost of Failure

Many of the published studies on the software industry are ten or more years old and have not yet been superseded by newer studies. However, many of the findings in these studies are still relevant as of this writing.

I’ve asked thousands of professional software developers who’ve attended my classes over the years what percentage of software projects they feel are successful. I get answers ranging from 5% to 30%.

Even though we hadn’t yet discussed the report, this anecdotal data isn’t far off the CHAOS Study’s findings. The developers’ answers reflect something we all know, regardless of having hard statistics to back us up or not:
