Part 1The Legacy Code Crisis
Am I the only one? Does anybody else notice—or care—that so much software doesn’t work as promised, or doesn’t work for long, and is often nearly impossible to fix?
Software is far from 100% successful. But how is the software development industry really doing? What percentage of software projects are successful? And what do we even mean by “successful” or “failed”? How do we measure those things?
I’ve asked a lot of people these questions, both inside and outside the software industry. Most people outside the industry find these strange questions to ask—“You mean some projects are unsuccessful?”—while the people inside the software industry might be tempted to ask, “You mean some projects are successful?”
