One of our jobs as script supervisors is to make sure that all the little pieces of action fit together. We talked about the importance of maintaining continuity for this end. Another part of this responsibility is to make sure the pieces fit according to the language and grammar of film.

If you are working with an inexperienced director and DP, you might be the go-to crew member in this subject. An experienced, visually inclined director will need you only as a safety net.
