COUNTRY CODE DOMAIN NAMES
Companies that are serious about expanding into new countries should consider expanding into new domains. Currently, there are more than 240 ccTLDs; these codes are assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) according to the ISO 3166 country abbreviations (see Appendix D, “Language and Country Codes”).
Although anyone anywhere can register a generic TLD, a country has sole authority over how its ccTLD is used. For instance, Japan only recently allowed non-residents the right to register .jp domain names. Some country domains are popular for reasons that have nothing to do with the country.
