DNS 101
The DNS is a global network of servers structured a lot like an inverted tree (see Figure 14.1). At the top of this tree is the appropriately named root server, which contains a master list of all domain names and their matching IP addresses. The process of translating, or resolving, domain names into numbers is shared by thousands of DNS servers scattered throughout this tree and around the world, each responsible for a specific domain. You don’t need to worry about how domain names are resolved, just how domain names fit together.
