WHEN CHARACTER SETS COLLIDE

In a few years, hopefully, this chapter will be made obsolete by Unicode. When all major software applications support Unicode, you’ll no longer need to worry about which application supports which character set. Unicode will make multilingual software more accessible, more affordable, and less intimidating. But until this chapter is made obsolete, study up on your character sets. Better yet, take a shot at working with double-byte character sets in the chapter “Hands-On: Chinese and Japanese.”
