WHERE THE COSTS COME FROM

Web globalization costs can be roughly divided into five major “slices”:

  • Project Management: Ongoing management of all participants and flow of content; also includes project management tools

  • Translation: Translators, editors, and support tools

  • Testing: Functionality, usability, and linguistic testing

  • Design and multimedia: The initial design localization and ongoing localization of new images and multimedia files

  • Development and tools: Assembly of localized web pages

As a percentage of the total budget, text translation typically makes up the largest slice, as shown in Figure 6.1.
