Appendix D. LANGUAGE AND COUNTRY CODES

Language and country codes play many vital roles on the Internet:

  • Language tags. Language and country codes are used in HTML documents in the LANG tag to identify the content language.

  • ccTLDs. Country codes are used in country code top-level domains (ccTLDs), as explained in Chapter 14, “Mastering Your (Country) Domain.”

  • Content negotiation. Language and country codes are used in the HTTP protocol to enable content negotiation between servers and browsers, as explained in Chapter 11, “World Wide Design.”

  • Organization. Language and country codes are used by web developers to efficiently organize and manage web content.
