A Model for the Benchmarking Process
The best benchmarking efforts are tailored to the needs of individual organizations. Many successful models for benchmarking use anywhere from four to 12 steps. AT&T's process has 12 steps; Spendolini, 11 steps; Camp, Texas Instruments and Xerox, 10; Coopers & Lybrand, nine steps; General Motors, eight steps; Westinghouse has seven; Alcoa and Watson, six steps; GTE, five steps; and APQC and the Air Force each have four. The model listed below has been adapted from the U.S. Navy.
