Learn from Your Mistakes; Don’t Make Them Again

Years ago there was a story about a new executive at a large company who was given charge of an important project. The project failed, and the executive was called into the CEO’s office. Expecting to be fired, the executive opened the conversation with the CEO by stating that he knew that the project failed, that he was ultimately responsible, and that he would be cleaning out his desk that day. The CEO responded, “I’m not going to fire you; I just spent several million dollars on your education!”

Whether a true story or not, I don’t know, but the point is that people are going to make mistakes, and the best way to respond to mistakes is to learn from them and prevent them from occurring again. ...
