Technique: Facilitation Essentials for Managers

Facilitation means providing a process and structure to help a group think and solve problems together. As a manager, you may have to help the group develop ideas, consider options, and choose a solution.

Make Sure the Meeting Has a Goal

When you design and facilitate a meeting, it’s important to have a goal. The goal needs to be specific enough to focus the participants on the current issue, but not so specific that it constrains the outcome. These are some examples of “broad enough” goals:

  • Identify practical ways to improve our build process.

  • Generate possible ways to overcome the impasse in vendor negotiations.
