Epilogue

Sam leaned back, and stretched. Well, we did it. We finished the release. Didn’t complete everything Marty wanted, but we did enough to make sure the customer would be happy. And we didn’t burn anyone out doing it—because the team applied good management principles.

Just then, Marty popped his head in. “Your team really pulled through for us,” Marty said. “You lit a fire under this group.”

Lighting a fire is not how management works, Sam thought. “They are a bright group. They care about their jobs and the company. All I did was create an environment for them to succeed.”

“I don’t know what magic you did, but it’s working,” Marty said. “They would follow you anywhere. You’d better stay here for a while.”

Sam smiled.
