In this chapter you learned:

• Follow the KISS design rule: "Keep it simple, stupid!"

• Use WSS to build simple intranets that do not require advanced features like web content management, Global searching, Excel Services and Forms Service.

• Use MOSS to make an advanced intranets with web content management.

• Try to find out what the intranet will be used for — do not simply create a copy of the old intranet, but try to see what features in SharePoint that will help users work more easily and faster.

• MOSS Enterprise Edition has 57 Web Parts by default, WSS has 8.

• WSS does not have a RSS Feed Web Part, but you can configure the XML Web Part for this purpose.

• Use the same site collection for all sites in your intranet, unless you have a good reason to create a new site collection, such as a demand for separate security settings.

• The Web Content Management System (WCMS) in MOSS allows web content authors to update the production server directly, while still being able to use version history, workflows, and so on.

• WCMS in MOSS is built on MS Content Management Server (MCMS), and has been extended with a lot of new features, such as workflows.

• The News site in MOSS allows content authors to create news items with the same control as any web page, using WCMS.

• The scheduling of News items is not enabled by default. It requires that the document library have Content Approval and Major and Minor Version history enabled.
