Chapter 9. Search, Performance, Statistics, and Reporting

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS CHAPTER:

  • Enabling and configuring your search engine

  • Extending the search capabilities on your site

  • Speeding up your site by enabling caching

  • Optimizing your CSS and JavaScript files

  • Taking your site offline by using maintenance mode

  • Reviewing your site's status report

  • Finding important information in your site's logs

  • Enabling and configuring the statistics module

Thus far, you have added user accounts, created and managed your content, and explored many of your site's configuration settings. In this chapter, you explore two of the most important aspects of creating a robust website. The first is enabling and configuring your search engine to provide a way for your visitors to dig through your site's content. The second is performance, or perhaps better said, how to make your site fast. In this chapter, you explore Drupal's caching options and other site optimization techniques.

Before getting too deep into your site, you'll also want to take the time to learn how to read your site's reports in order to determine the health and status of your site. Drupal reports can alert you to possible hacking attempts and errors with module code, and even show you the latest updated content. Using these reports, you can stay on top of the activity on your site and rest assured that your site is working properly.
