13.2. About the <Updater> Class

The Updater class is an extremely important class to AIR developers, as it allows the AIR application to update itself. Why is this so important? Those who come from Web development have the ability to push out a change to one single location and ensure that the next time someone visits your web site the new version of the application will be the one the user sees. However, with a desktop application, there can be a disconnect between the most recent code and the application that is actually running on the client's machine. As the developer of the AIR application, the only way you can handle this is to build your application so that it checks for updates automatically and either alerts the user that there is an update available or forces the user to download the update before using the application again. As you will see, the download and install of the new version of the application is completely seamless.

13.2.1. Methodology for Application Updates

Using the Updater class to install a new version of the application is well defined and will be demonstrated below in this chapter. The methodology for determining whether or not an update is required is a personal decision. The following method is one that I came up with and use in my AIR applications.
