In the old days (like, twenty years ago), most people had dial-up Internet, we used fax machines to crank out documents page by page, and we waited three days to receive an important item in the mail. The only instant communications were the phone and tapping someone on the shoulder. There were very few cell phones, so if you commuted to and from work, you usually listened to the radio in the car or read a book on the train or bus. If you wanted to get work done over the weekend, you went back into the office.

Believe it or not, people thought they were busy then.
