Handling Customer Service “Experts”

Sometimes people who deal with customers in their jobs—supervisors, managers, business owners—can be among the worst customers. These self-appointed experts love to throw their experience or position around, and they usually do so to bully you. They want to show you that they know your job better than you do, even if they really don’t have a clue. Perhaps you’ve heard comments like these before:

If I treated my customers like you do, I’d be out of business in a week.”

Don’t they teach you anything about customer service here? I’m the customer; you’re supposed to do what I want.”

I run a sales team of 50 people, and if one of my people treated a customer like this, I’d fire them in ten seconds ...
