There is an enormous difference between the large-scale commercial production of software and an individual writing a computer program for their own use. The problems are much larger, too large for one person to manage, and usually have to be tackled by a team. A formal approach to the task is essential, to plan and to enable members of the team to communicate both during development and afterwards.
