Staying Alive

Journalism can be a dangerous business. There are always those who wish to keep their activities hidden and are prepared to go to extraordinary lengths to prevent any attempt at uncovering them. They are not always swayed by arguments about truth, justification, or the national or public interest.

Some regimes get over this problem by simply refusing to open their borders to anyone they consider ‘unsympathetic’. Short of illegal entry or posing as a tourist, no reporter can do much about that, and then the consequences of exposure are obvious. Other countries allow in foreign journalists, but impose strict censorship and other conditions which may or may not make it worthwhile being there at all.
