Television reporting may have undergone a revolution since videotape replaced film as the raw material of news gathering: without the communications satellite to speed the material on its way that revolution could not have just been complete.

Journalists have made use of satellite technology since 1962, when Telstar was launched from Florida. The formation of the International Telecommunications Satellite Organisation (Intelsat) followed two years later, providing the impetus for a system which links continents to ensure same-day news coverage from virtually anywhere in the world.
