In the example given, having to say

‘Mix 1 … zoom 1 … up lights … dip music, and cue John.’

is what usually trips up new directors. Learn it by rote, say it clearly and you will have plenty of time.

Know where your sound is coming from

We often run music under opening sequences, and that sound may well come from the same tape as the opening titles (in this case VT A). We obviously need to let VT A run right through to where John is starting his introduction to the first story. Just because you are not taking the pictures does not mean you can eject a VT.

The first machine likely to become free is VT B (as soon as its headline underlay is clear). The VT for your top story is likely to come from this machine. ...
