Stuffing up the start of a live programme is one of the most depressing ways to spend your day. No matter how brilliant you are for the rest of the show, it will be an imperfect programme.

Most programmes start the same way each time, with standard camera moves and often fixed VT machines for replays. Learn the format.

Typical starts

Let’s look at a typical programme. It has opening titles which mix to a wide shot of the studio, a lighting change, camera zooms in to a tight 2-shot and presenters (two of them) speak alternately.
