Staffing is the biggest cost most studios face, so there is not surprisingly considerable interest in automated systems that help reduce the number of people needed to put out a live programme.

One way this has been tackled has been through machine control software (MCS) – using electronic newsroom systems to replace some studio operations. Some applications have worked very well. Others have yet to prove their worth. A few are a complete nightmare.
