Protection copies

Some tapes are used day in, day out. Typically these are titles, break stings, graphics backgrounds etc. It is worth having a second copy of these tapes standing by in case your set gets chewed up or a bit worn out.

Assigning machines

Some studios run with a system of the director deciding before the programme begins which machine will be used to replay each tape. You can mark up your script in advance, but it can cause confusion if there are many changes to the running order, with two tapes being needed back to back from the same machine. Obviously you would need to re-assign during the programme.
