Programmes need good directors. Not just the shows that turn out looking great, but the ones that totter on the edge of disaster.

Let’s look at a live news programme where you have plenty of time to plan, rehearse and refine. By the time transmission comes along everyone knows exactly what is needed of them. They know all their sources and cues, so when you’re on air there really is very little for you to say. The programme flows smoothly, confidently and comes off air on time.
