Run-up time
Video material is edited (away from camera) by re-recording shots from the originating tapes into a new sequence onto a transmission tape.
Before each shot is transferred, both VTRs (playback and record) require a pre-roll from the edit point to allow the transport and servos to reach correct speed and stability. It is essential during this pre-roll, that there is at least 6 seconds of stable picture and continuous time code. If there is unrecorded ‘shash’ or the time code is discontinuous, then the edit may be aborted.
People have differing abilities to estimate time passing. At times, four seconds may seem like eight. Check that your ability to gauge an adequate runup time is accurate.
