Betacam format

The Betacam format was introduced in 1982 primarily as a news-gathering camera/recorder. It superseded the use of reversal film in news bulletins and the portable video camera with separate U-matic recorder. With an upgrading of vision and sound quality made possible by the use of metal particle tape, Betacam SP was introduced and was used in almost all categories of programme production. The compact design of the Betacam format enabled a broadcast quality camera, for the first time, to be combined with a video recorder and operated by one person.
