Besides the simple "$myvar" form of parameter expansion, there are some other forms available for common string operations that can be very useful. Some of these forms are specified by the POSIX shell scripting standard, and others are specific to Bash itself; we will distinguish them with the bash$ prompt for Bash-specific forms, and the single $ prompt for POSIX-specified forms.
