Capacity planning is an important component of a successful scalable backup architecture. Numerous variables and configuration permutations must be accounted for. Frequently, systems cannot do the required job because they use the wrong product. Installation and configuration can be complex, with many opportunities for error.

Within any system there can be interrelated bottlenecks; therefore, an important part of successful capacity planning involves minimizing the impact of any bottlenecks.
