Database Backup Technology

There are three basic types of full database backups: online, offline, and raw device backups.

Online backups are logical backups of a database that can be run while the database is handling transactions.

Offline backups are logical backups of a database that is in a quiescent mode and is unavailable for transactions.

Raw device backups are physical backups of raw disk slices.

Using the online backup method is the least intrusive approach and is a popular solution for databases that must be available 24 hours a day.
