Physical and Logical Backups

Physical backups copy a byte-for-byte image of an entire database, or raw disk partition to a backup device. Logical backups copy the logical entities in the database or the individual files in a file system to a backup device. Each type of backup presents a different configuration problem.

Physical backups are usually much faster than logical backups because the source is read sequentially and the data can be retrieved at full device speed. The drawback is that an entire raw partition must be backed up as a single entity. Therefore, physical backups are useful for backing up whole partitions. Physical backups require quiescent and internally consistent sources to ensure data integrity.
