Executive Summary

Overview

As multi-Tbyte databases become common, and available backup windows continue to shrink, the issue of backing up very large databases in the shortest possible time has become increasingly urgent. To address this problem, Sun Microsystems, Inc., VERITAS Software Corp., the Oracle Corp., and Storage Technology Corp. (STK) came together in the Sun Enterprise Technology Center to conduct high-speed database backup scalability tests. The three scenarios tested were:

  1. Online, or hot backup of an Oracle database

  2. Offline, or cold backup of an Oracle database

  3. Raw device backup of the Oracle database volumes.
