How it works...

  • Weighted resource record sets contain a group of resources having the same combination of DNS name and type, and each resource record set is assigned a unique identifier and a relative weight. 
  • Route 53 selects one endpoint from the group. The probability of selecting a resource depends on the weight as a proportion of the total weight of all resources.
  • For example: Suppose you have a small on-premises infrastructure and large instances in AWS, to balance your load, you can create two resource record sets with weight 1 (20%) pointing to the on-premises server and weight 4 (80%) pointing to the AWS instances.
