Arelational database relies on tables to organize data, with rows holding individual records and columns holding individual data items. The tables focus on specific topics, such as employee names and dates of birth. They relate to other tables, which is what gives relational databases their names. For example, a single employee can have multiple telephone numbers, so the telephone numbers would appear in a separate table related to the employee table using a common element, such as the employee ID.
