When you need to animate your 3D objects position, tween engines are usually the best solutions not only for basic transformations, but even for powering complex transitions such as those found in particle effects. There is a wide range of open-source as well as commercial tweening engines such as TweenMax (Green Sock), GTween (Grant Skinner), Tweener (Zeh Fernando), BeTween, and more.
