Provision User Profile Services
The User Profile Service in SharePoint 2010 is an enhanced version of what we had in SharePoint 2007, and it allows for the storage and management of user-specific metadata within SharePoint. Unlike with SharePoint 2007, which provided a one-way pull of data into SharePoint from Active Directory, SharePoint 2010 also provides the ability to push data back to Active Directory via the User Profile Synchronization Service (a new service to SharePoint 2010 that also does the pull). Note that the User Profile Synchronization Service is required only if you intend to, at a minimum, pull data from Active Directory.
