Create and Extend Web Applications

Now that you have mastered the art of Application Pools, it is time to put them to use. The Web Application has several components that are important to understand. In Figure 7.2, you will notice that the SharePoint Web Application lives under the Sites node in IIS. The Web Application is hosted by an Application Pool, and it contains at least one Content Database and several files located on the web server. The files that are contained within the Web Application are oftentimes shared with other Web Applications. Notice the folders with shortcut symbols on them. These folders (_controltemplates, _layouts, _vti_bin, _wpresources) are located in the SharePoint 14 Root folder.
