Configure Incoming and Outgoing Email

One of the common tasks that just about every SharePoint administrator will have to perform is enabling SharePoint to send—and in some rare cases, receive—email. Unfortunately, the SharePoint team did not provide you with any cmdlets to use to configure outgoing and incoming email. However, you can do this easily using the SharePoint API. The following sections demonstrate how to configure SharePoint to send and receive emails using Windows PowerShell and the SharePoint API.
