Classification of Industries

There are several systems for classifying industries. The US Standard Industrial Classifications (SIC) started in 1937. It has been mostly replaced by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) of 1997. Europe has The Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community (NACE). The acronym comes from the French title: Nomenclature statistique des Activités économiques dans la Communauté Européenne.

Fortunately, the United Nations has published the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC), Revision 4, in 2008. It is substantially inclusive of SIC, NAICS, NACE, and others, although the numeric codes are different. There are ...
