Chapter 8

Criminal Law

Abstract

This chapter discusses the use of augmented world technologies for both criminal activity and law enforcement. Augmented reality games and other applications are already rife with opportunities for misinterpretation by, and run-ins with, police officers who are unfamiliar with the medium. AR will offer opportunities for criminal actors to recruit and collaborate with new members, and provide new tools for carrying out criminal plans. Law enforcement agencies are likewise working to develop AR tools and strategies. At the same time, wearable devices and other augmented world technologies offer unique ways for the public to hold their law enforcement officers accountable.
