3.7 SUMMARY
This chapter covered quantization essentials and provided background on PCM, DPCM, vector quantization, bit allocation, and entropy coding algorithms. A quantization–bit allocation–entropy coding (QBE) framework that is part of most of the audio coding standards was described. Some of the important concepts addressed in this chapter include:
- Uniform and nonuniform quantization
- PCM, DPCM, and ADPCM techniques
- Vector quantization, structured VQ, split VQ, and conjugate structure VQ
- Bit-allocation strategies
- Source coding principles
