5.5.1 Introduction

The principles of audio engineering, like the laws of physics which govern them, are universal, and the operational techniques required to achieve particular styles of sound balance and control are well established. Outside the predictable environment of the studio, however, engineers must practise their skills in conditions which may range from inconvenient to downright unpleasant. Adverse acoustics, dubious power supplies and the need to interface with unfamiliar apparatus are just a few of the problems encountered by technicians ‘on the road’.
