CHAPTER 11

The Social Business

The next big catchphrase is “Social Business.” You will most likely see all kinds of discussion on the topic and it is important enough that I feel the need to discuss it here. Social business is the culmination of much of what has been discussed so far regarding social listening, social CRM, and your employees’ actions within social media. The other key component is the social workplace. There will be a shift in how we do business. Many of us are familiar with the command and control style of leadership, but that does not always make the most collaborative workforce.

The Millennial Generation is very different from Generation X or the baby boomers. The Baby Boomer Generation worked well with a top-down structure. Boomers waited for their time to take the reins and did an amazing job. Generation X did not always like that style but would still fall into line and do what was expected, according to their baby boomer bosses. Now that they are taking the reins, part of the mark that they leave will be a different leadership style. Adding to the shift in leadership, the Millennial Generation is becoming a dominant force in the workplace. I sometimes prefer to call this group Generation Why, because they like to question things, even the senior most leaders.
