A

acceleration The change in the velocity of an object over the amount of time required to make that change. (The acceleration of gravity on an object is independent of the object’s mass and is a universal constant, g = 9.8 meters/second2.)

acid Substances that give up a proton (producing an H+ ion) when in an aqueous (water) solution. They turn blue litmus paper red and have low pH numbers.

algebraic expression A mathematical statement that contains constants (definite numbers), variables (letter representations of number values), mathematical operations, and grouping symbols (such as parentheses).

alternating current (AC) An electrical current that has a regular and recurring change in flow direction.
