It’s All in the Mind

A basic difference between assertion and other behaviours is how our words and behaviour can affect the rights of others.

Assertiveness is an attitude of mind, with an accompanying set of beliefs about yourself and the world around you.

We talked in Chapter 2 about win-win being the central theme to assertion. Exercising win-win is evidence to others that you “walk the talk” and recognize that you live in an interdependent world where give and take is both necessary and desirable. Your needs matter, just as the needs of other people matter.

In this chapter we consider the mindset, and a set of mind tools that will help to provide you with the thinking processes that align your behaviour to your thoughts.
