Many other image formats are available, but you are usually limited on the web by what browsers support.
As discussed in the previous chapter, you shouldn't scale images in the browser, or you will get poor performance. This usually means having to save multiple separate copies of smaller images, for example, when displaying thumbnails. Clearly, this results in duplication, which is inefficient. Some of these new image formats have clever solutions to the problem of responsive and scalable images.
