I have always been fascinated with computer programming. When I was 12, I took my first programming class at our local junior college. I went on to get a degree in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In the '90s I became enamored with Rapid Application Development. This led me to programming in both Borland Delphi and Microsoft Visual Basic. At the time, I developed retail software for computers running Windows. A large percent of time on each project was spent writing the installer and testing the software on each version of the operating system, with and without each of the patches associated with that particular version. I thought, "There has to be a better way!"

In the late '90s I was given the opportunity to write an application for the Internet. I found that developing the pages took half the time of a traditional Windows application. Also, the time to deploy was next to nothing. A few weeks after I deployed that first web application, the users requested some reports be added to their system. In the past, I would have had to write an installation routine and send everyone the new setup file. On the Internet, I just updated the web site and everyone had access to the new files immediately.
