This is the tale of an industry in a battle for survival. Its firms had experienced tremendous growth until the 1980s. Government had subsidized industry expansion. New plants shot up all over the country. Its products were popular. Its managers and employees did not receive the highest wages, but there were long vacations and a generous employee discount.
