8. The Bongos and Echoes of Drums Along the Hudson

I always felt a connection to the Bongos, since they hailed from Hoboken, New Jersey—a stone’s throw away from the small suburban town where I grew up and was in a band myself. Their music was different—Richard Barone’s compositions were melodic and complex—even though it seemed like they all had a three-chord foundation. The Bongos’ rhythms were hypnotic and mesmerizing. When they played live, unrestrained and untethered, they had an electricity and spirit about them I have never seen in any other band since.

Although they weren’t known at a national level until their later influential MTV video, “Numbers with Wings,” they were instrumental in creating the music scene in Hoboken that is thriving ...
