We have been over-enthusiastic about automatic vision tasks: unfortunately, many ‘general-purpose’ image-processing algorithms have failed when used in specific contexts, and no general theory for recognizing patterns has succeeded in obtaining efficient and effective means to solve real-world problems. Rather than designing ad hoc systems to tackle problems in specific domains, the available human knowledge from given working areas can be used, provided that a good communication exists between artificial vision programs and experienced users.
